It is said that Bhairon Nath, a famous Hindu Tantric, fell head over heels in love with the young Vaishno Devi at an agricultural fair. To avoid his seductive attempts, Vaishno Devi fled into the Trikuta hills. Later, she took the guise of Durga and killed him in a cave with her sword. Hindu tradition maintains that the original residence of Vaishno Devi was Ardh Kunwari, a location roughly halfway between Katra town and the cave.
