It serves as a memorial to the 84,000 British Indian Army personnel who lost their lives between 1914 and 1921 in the First World War, in France, Flanders, Mesopotamia, Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli, and other locations in the Near and Far East, as well as the Third Anglo-Afghan War.
