One of India’s oldest stone structures and an important monument of Indian architectural history is the Great Stupa in Sanchi. In the third century BCE, Ashoka the Great, the Mauryan emperor, commissioned it to be built. Its foundation was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over Buddha relics.
