The main reason to construct the Gateway of India was to honor King George V and Queen Mary’s visit to Bombay. The first foundation for the monument was laid by Sir George Sydenham Clarke, who was the Governor of Bombay at the time, in March 1911. Even though this plan wasn’t approved until 1914, Apollo Bunder’s reclamations weren’t finished until 1919. George Wittet, an architect, created the Gateway of India’s exterior design. The construction of this monument took 4 years to complete.
